A San Francisco Neighborhood Portrait

Geographer Gray Brechin has called the Portola “San Francisco Incognito” because the neighborhood and its history are so little known.

Working in collaboration with the San Francisco Public Library and residents of the Portola District, four Portola artists—Kate Connell and Oscar Melara, visual artists; Gustavo Vazquez, filmmaker; John Calloway, musician and composer—created Portola at Play, a neighborhood portrait in four parts:
